A leading marine scientist has left her role in the National Fisheries Management Authority (NFMA) for political reasons, it emerged last night.

Eleanor Coop, the former head of the Institute for Ecosystem Studies, a UK-based think-tank, has been absent from work ever since she took up the post of minister of state for science at National Heritage in July 2014.

It was this which was blamed by some critics as not leaving enough time to address research concerns about overfishing which was seen by many as an attempt to stymie some of the proposed projects.

In an official statement a spokesman for Mr Coop was quoted as saying: "Eleanor Coop's leadership of the National Heritage Foundation has been marred by an unfortunate incident last year in which the NFA found she did not provide sufficient time to address certain scientific issues".

He added: "Following this incident she has voluntarily left the position of minister of state for science to seek a new role."

Mr Coop, who was appointed minister of state for science in April 2014, last year became the first member of a Cabinet group to be formally suspended from the job for two consecutive years, following the resignation of David Ford, the former Environment Secretary, in May 2015.

His successor was the then Environment Secretary Owen Paterson, who quit just before the end of the summer.

The NFA has faced repeated criticism for taking a number of politically sensitive and potentially politically sensitive proposals forward in a bid to build support for certain environmental legislation.

These include an overhaul of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill to tackle overfishing and the renewal of the EU's Marine Directive to reduce the numbers of fish entering European waters.

It also proposes to replace the National Fisheries Strategy with a new set of policies and processes that will help ensure the long-term sustainability of fishing communities.

The minister for public works Simon Hamilton stepped down from cabinet this summer following a row over how he sought to bring into government a review of the Marine and Freshwater Conservation Act that he argued was not sufficient in its present form t

Pies end cats' finals hopes with 48 point win

Cameron Spencer â Triple M Cats

Pies fans have been waiting for the day the Cats have lost their finals series, and while some pundits predicted it would be on Saturday, that may have been an unrealistic expectation. Spencer's brilliant night against Richmond with five goals and 22 disposals is a fitting way to close out the season as he showed the Cats who's boss, while his three goals in eight games against Geelong made him a perfect candidate to be our new best player.

The Dogs, meanwhile, could be down to only seven from their best 23 players after winning two, with Mitch Duncan as the lone casualty due to an ankle injury. The Dogs didn't allow a score from their own 10 in either match, with the lone goal on the day from Rory Sloane, so don't expect to see them in the finals for a while.

James Frawley â 3AW Cats

After a tough start, it's fair to say we all expected more of Frawley, his big win against Essendon and his win against the Dogs was a big step up from last year's disappointing performance. He's one of the most consistent ball users in the competition, which is pretty rare after a loss. Still, the Dogs have had a difficult start with the loss of several players, so Frawley deserves recognition for being a big factor. This season is going to get off to a great start, and maybe we will see that at the finals.

Ben Brown â 3AW Cats

After their big win against Richmond, we had high hopes for Brown after a strong debut season. He has taken a significant step forward in 2016 after having a great year at the end of last year with the Cats. He played 22 disposals in the game and will have huge competition after the Dogs, with Aaron Young and Callum Sinclair all going down at some stage this season.
