St kilda man detained after alleged flight threat

A man is detained following a threat against two women at an airport in Adelaide.

A spokesman for the police force said police were called at about 3.20pm on Tuesday evening to reports of a male with a woman in a car at a domestic terminal.

"Officers responded and there was an individual in a white car with a woman present, who also had a child in the car," the spokesman said.

"They then had to drive to their next destination."

Witnesses said the man was a young man with a young child.

The police spokesman said there were no arrests.

He urged people to contact their local Police Service about threats.

"The police are fully co-operating with anyone experiencing threats and harassment within their communities," he said.

Nsw to tighten security foi laws, say councillors

One man has died after being shot by North Sydney police, and another was arrested for breaching bail conditions in connection with the shooting, police told reporters in Sydney's north today.

The man was shot around 8pm after being tackled in an alley in South Street in Sydney's CBD.

"A man has been arrested in relation to this incident. He's a North Sydney male," Assistant Commissioner Andrew Scipione said.

"He has been charged with aggravated assault and was yesterday taken into custody."

The arrested man is expected to appear in court later today.

An ambulance arrived at Sydney's Westmead Hospital and was taken back by emergency services to the Sydney Central Health Campus.

Ambulance Queensland said a man in his 30s appeared to be in a stable condition and "under medical observation" but that he had suffered no serious injury.

The man has been charged with an offence not involving violence and breaching bail conditions, officers said.

'We can take that risk'

South Sydney councillor Matt Smith said the incident was the biggest he had been "caught off guard" by in terms of a police operation.

"You have just about as many people with guns in Sydney as you do on foot in this street," he said.

South Sydney police assistant commissioner Andrew Scipione said the arrest took place shortly before 6pm and it did not appear the shooting had been random.

The injured man appeared to be in a stable condition and under medical observation, with no other suspects at large, he said.

He said police were in the process of interviewing the man and any witnesses.

He said there was a possibility the man had suffered other injuries during the incident, but that it was not yet known.

Mr Smith said the man had been in Sydney for about a year and was living overseas.

'Not a crime scene'

A spokeswoman for the Northern Beaches Local Area Command said: "We're unable to comment about a possible investigation at this time because we cannot speak to an investigation that takes place outside of the city limits at this stage."

Assistant Commissioner Scipione said police had been given permission to use the Sydney Central Health Campus at Northmead to gather information from around the city.

He said a decision on whether police would extend that permission was yet to be made.

Police were earlier told there was a report of a knife attack on the city's CBD.

No charges have been laid, but police said it was their highest priority.
