Storing gas involves risks emergency services warn can kill them.
When you put a gas can in your vehicle, you don't feel invincible.
"It's like a drug," says emergency medical technician Tony Hickey, who treated three gas station workers at the site. One of the three suffered a heart attack, including a collapsed lung, which left him paralysed.
Mr Hickey also has a 10-year-old son who had a seizure at a gas station in the summer of 2010 and has suffered permanent nerve damage.
Mr Hickey's colleague, paramedic David Doyon, is an experienced emergency medicine technician with 24 years experience.
While the workers said they did try to help the young man but had no control over his situation, they said the medical help could have been lifesaving.
In another case, a couple working in a home in the heart of Sydney's inner west said that a man tried to put the cans inside them but the cans got stuck, preventing their efforts.
In one instance, the pair saw that a canister of propane was partially filled but it had become jammed when he filled another canister.
However, they managed to get the canister out before it was too late and saved the man's life.
Mr Hickey said the safety of his team is paramount, even when it comes to the health of the man they're treating, or the man's mother or child.
However, he warned that a person's safety is not guaranteed.
In the first three months of 2010, the NSW Ambulance Service received more than 1000 emergency calls related to gas emergencies, according to its latest figures.
It was the highest figure since the NSW Ambulance Service started collecting such data in 2001.
The spike in the number of emergency calls followed the discovery of gas canister fires at gas stations in the Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt in June, with firefighters saying they were forced to call in the emergency services over a huge blaze.
The NSW Police Crime Commission has launched an investigation into allegations of negligence by gas company Varnish Ltd.
