Emerald developer celebrates bulk store win against local rival.
Cape Town - The Emerald has been awarded the best food, drink and entertainment award for 2017 by the World Public Health Association - despite the ongoing struggles of the region's supermarkets.
The global health body was inspired by the success of McDonald's International in the U.S., where it was able to sell an average of around 80,000 burgers a day.
And in addition to the food, the award also saw the Emerald win for best community service.
In total, 21 community members were nominated, with the prize winning one receiving the nod for Best Community Service.
Emerald Director of Marketing and Communication Michaela Thijssen said the organization was "pleased" to win the award and to celebrate the local industry.
"The Emerald has grown quickly in a relatively short period of time as a result of the success of our business model. Our success is more than just our success on the ground. We want to be recognised by the communities and in doing so we are going to be better placed to move into the future and achieve our aspirations."
She added: "I would like to wish all our members, customers and other partners great success at every step in the development of our business. We are looking forward to continuing our growth as we move forward."
The Emerald was founded in 2008 as a one-stop shop and restaurant to attract businesses that wished to open across its extensive retail footprint, and which was later rebranded to the Cape Town-based company, The Green.
The company quickly grew to 200 outlets across 24 countries, with staff in excess of 3,000, and employs over 70 people in the region.
Over the past decade, the Emerald has grown into one of South Africa's leading food, drink and entertainment facilities with retail stores in Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban and Marikana.
